Mullens a candidate at LSU

UK’s No. 2 man in athletics, Rob Mullens, is one of six finalists for the Athletics Director job at LSU.

LSU announced the six finalists on Monday.

Keightley dies

Long-time UK basketball equipment manager Bill Keightley died on Monday, friend Van Florence said. Keightley was 81.

Keightley and Florence were part of a group that traveled to Cincinnati to watch the Reds’ game against Arizona. Keightley fell as he got off a bus at the stadium, Florence said.

Initially, the group did not believe Keightley had been seriously injured, Florence said.

However, Keightley apparently suffered internal injuries and died while being treated at University of Cincinnati Hospital, Florence said.

A native of Lawrenceburg, Keightley had worked in UK basketball’s equipment room since 1962. He and the late radio play-by-play announcer Cawood Ledford are the only non-player or non-coaches to have their jerseys ceremonially retired in Rupp Arena.

Keightley was affectionately known as “Mr. Wildcat.”

Horn reportedly new South Carolina coach

The newspaper in Columbia, S.C., is reporting that Western Kentucky Coach (and Lexington native) Darrin Horn will be named the new coach at South Carolina.

Here’s what the newspaper, The State, is reporting:

Darrin Horn has agreed to be South Carolina new men’s basketball coach, several sources said Monday. A press conference is expected Tuesday to introduce Horn.

Horn, 35, leaves Western Kentucky, his alma mater, after five seasons. He replaces Dave Odom, who stepped down after his seventh season as the Gamecocks coach.

The USC board of trustees, which has to approve Horn’s contrct, has been called for a meeting Tuesday at 11 a.m. Board chairman Herbert Adams confirmed to The State that the meeting, which will probably be via teleconference, is regarding the new basketball coach, but could not say who the new coach would be.

Details of Horn’s deal with USC are unknown, but the source said the base salary is in the range of $750,000.

A press conference is expected to take place Tuesday, according to another source.

The Gamecock players are expected to be told later today, when they attend their end-of-season banquet. It was originally supposed to be held Sunday night at Odom’s house, but was postponed because of the weather.

Horn has been the leading candidate, sources have said for several days. USC athletics director Eric Hyman called his Western Kentucky counterpart over the weekend to tell him he would be contacting Horn.

Horn was 111-48 in five seasons at Western Kentucky, winning the Sun Belt conference for the first time this season. The Hilltoppers received a No. 12 seed in the NCAA tournament, then advanced to the Sweet 16 by beating fifth-seeded Drake and No. 13 San Diego.

Horn’s last game at WKU ended up being a Thursday loss to top seed UCLA, which two days later advanced to this weekend’s Final Four.

This was the Hilltoppers’ only NCAA tournament appearance under Horn, but they also advanced to the NIT. In 2006 they made the second round, where they were eliminated in the second round with a loss at South Carolina.

Patterson named Freshman All-American

Kentucky big man Patrick Patterson has been named to a Freshman All-American team.

Here’s the news release:

Kentucky freshman Patrick Patterson continued pulling in the postseason honors, as he was named a Freshman All-American by CollegeInsider.com as announced by the organization.

Rather then assembling first, second, third and fourth team squads, the collegeinsider.com Freshmen All-America team is one team consisting of 16 players. Division I coaches and NBA scouts are part of the selection process, but final decision rests with the collegeinsider.com staff.

Despite missing UK’s last five games with a stress fracture in his left foot, Patterson finished the regular season as one of two freshmen to rank in the SEC’s top 10 in both scoring (9th) and rebounding (7th), and is one of two players in the league’s top 10 in points, rebounds, field goal percentage (5th) and free throw percentage (9th).

Patterson finished the season averaging 16.4 points, second on the team, and a team high 7.7 rebounds. He also shot a team best 57 percent from the field.

It is the second freshman All-America team he has been selected to, receiving second team honors from CollegeHoops.net last week. He was also named the SEC Coaches’ Co-Freshman of the Year as well as being named a second team All-SEC performer by the coaches and the Associated Press.

Elliott ‘probable’ for Sunday

Sarah Elliott, the center on Kentucky’s women’s team, sustained a hyper extension in her right knee against James Madison on Wednesday. There was no swelling, so UK lists her as “probable” for Sunday’s game against Marquette.

UK will play Marquette on Sunday (2 p.m. tip) in the quarter-finals of the Women’s NIT.

Elliott is UK’s most productive inside player. She sustained the injury with 7:54 left in the game against James Madison.

UK women face James Madison

Kentucky Coach Matthew Mitchell sees a similar opponent in Wednesday night’s third-game round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. He’ll hope to get a similar result.
Like Middle Tennessee (which UK beat in overtime on Friday), James Madison features a singular star. She’s Tamera Young, the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year.
“One player that can take over a game,” Mitchell said of the strength James Madison shares with Middle Tennessee. “That’s not the type of team we are. We defend, rebound and score by committee.”
Because Middle Tennessee basically played with five guards, Kentucky had to go small to match up defensively. “A nightmare to match up with,” he said at a Tuesday news conference.
James Madison isn’t quite so small, which gives Mitchell reason to believe his taller players (primarily 6-foot-6 Sarah Elliott and 6-3 Eleia Roddy) can have a greater impact.
“If they’re close to the basket, it helps our team a lot,” Mitchell said.
Two of UK’s younger players picked up the slack against Middle Tennessee. Sophomore Lydia Watkins came off the bench and contributed her first career double-double (16 points and 16 rebounds). Freshman Victoria Dunlap blocked four shots and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds.
“Thirty rebounds, and not against an easy team to rebound against,” Mitchell said. “When you see that kind of effort, players laying it on the line at a young age, there are a lot of things to be pleased with.
“You certainly hope that continues.”
To explain why the younger players rose to the occasion, Mitchell noted the time Kentucky had to work on individual improvement in recent weeks.  For instance, the team had a week off between the Southeastern Conference and the Women’s NIT.
The coach also saluted the players’ coachability.
“They were willing to accept coaching this time of year,” Mitchell said. “Down the stretch, everybody can be sick of each other and not want to listen. That hasn’t been the case.”
Kentucky, 16-15, knows it must contain Young. She’s averaging double-double (20.2 points and 10.2 rebounds) for James Madison.
“Very lean and extremely athletic,” Mitchell said. “When she catches the ball around the three-point line, she can get to the goal in one dribble. She’s also one of the best jump shooters I’ve seen in the women’s game.
“The way to play her is you can’t give her anything easy. She can get if off the glass and go all the way. . . . The best word to use is ‘explosive.’ She can just do an awful lot very quickly.”
Young scored 38 and 30 points in James Madison’s two WNIT games.
Freshman point guard Dawn Evans supports Young well. She had 38 points in a second-round victory at Indiana. That made up for a one-for-14 shooting performance againste Radford in the first round.
Whatever happens, Mitchell saw Kentucky’s participation in the WNIT as a plus.
“When you play in games where you lose, you go home, there’s a different type of pressure than in the fourth or fifth game in December,” he said. “The more opportunities you get to play in those type of games, the better you are.
“This allows your seniors to continue to play. It also allows players coming back to get the experience you can’t get in any other atmosphere than tournament basketball.”

Bradley to release hip hop CD

Former UK guard Ramel Bradley has recorded music and plans to release a CD.

Here’s the news release that came on Tuesday:

University of Kentucky senior and Wildcat basketball star, Ramel Bradley is expected to release his debut hip-hop album on April 15.  The Brooklyn, NY native has been working with singer-songwriter/producer, Jonathan Webb, in the recording process.  A few tracks on the album will feature Webb’s music.  The album, which is expected to showcase ten songs, will feature tracks produced by former UK basketball player, Bobby Perry, as well as the work of Jay Azubuike, younger brother of another former UK player, Kelenna Azubuike.  Webb has also helped to produce and arrange several tracks.

“It’s been really great working with Ramel.  Our musical backgrounds are obviously different; he raps and I sing, but we both have stories to tell which we portray through our lyrics,” Webb, 22, said.

Bradley’s lyrics will show you a different side of the extroverted player that fans have come to know on the court.  His tracks tell the story of a young boy growing up in Brooklyn; of his dreams and aspirations; and the life changing experience of coming to Lexington.  The album’s first single is to be released on April 1.

“It’s an edgy hip-hop album,” Webb said, “that reflects a lifestyle of someone growing up in Brooklyn.”

Bradley is expected to finish his album on March 31, and his first appearance following the release will be at the Jonathan Webb Music Festival on April 12.  Webb and Bradley will then be co-headlining a show on April 25 at the Dame, in Lexington, Kentucky.

Ramel Bradley, 23, grew up in Brooklyn, NY and came to the University of Kentucky as a freshman to play basketball.  Music has been a lifelong interest of Bradley’s, having begun writing lyrics as a young boy.  He has appeared on stage at Webb’s concerts, once arriving unplanned to perform Webb’s song, “Stand Up” to a sold out crowd at the Singletary Center Concert Hall (see link at bottom of page).
