Louisville opens up second half with rally

Louisville jumped on Kentucky with defensive pressure to start the second half. UK committed turnovers in three of its first four possessions.

Louisville converted with nine straight points to take a 39-31 lead. UK called timeout with 17:54 to talk it over. Coach Billy Gillispie went with a small lineup that many think are his best players: Ramel Bradley, Joe Crawford, Jodie Meeks, Derrick Jasper and Patrick Patterson.

Those players slowed Louisville’s charge. The Cards led 41-35 at the first timeout of the second half.

Kentucky leads 31-30 at halftime

Despite concluding the half with four straight turnovers, Kentucky lead 31-30 at intermission.

Two free throws by Jodie Meeks put the Cats ahead 31-28 with 1:49 left. Kentucky had nothing but turnovers the rest of the way.

UK’s defense limited Louisville to two free throws in the final 3:54. Andre McGee’s free throws with 53.3 seconds left set the halftime score. Otherwise, the Cards missed three shots and committed three turnovers down the stretch.

The third of Kentucky’s turnovers irked the fans. Ramel Bradley was called for walking near midcourt as he tried to navigate U of L’s press, the same pressure UK fans loved with Rick Pitino was their coach.

This time, the fans booed to show their displeasure that a foul was not called on a Cardinal contesting Bradley’s dribble.

Bradley fuels UK rally

Six straight points by Ramel Bradley completed a Kentucky comeback from a one-time 11-point deficit.

Two of the baskets came in transition as Louisville turnovers rewarded UK’s intensified defense.

Jodie Meeks backtipped the ball from David Padgett to start the first fastbreak. Bradley completed it by hitting a layup while being bodied to the floor by Padgett. The three-point play tied the score at 22-22 with 5:37 left.

Bradley gave UK its first lead since 3-2 when he drove the baseline for another layup while being fouled by Padgett. That put UK ahead 27-26 with 4:43 left.

The UK lead stood at 29-28 at the final TVtimeout (the 2:06 mark).

UK turns up intensity against Louisville

After the second TV timeout, Kentucky applied noticably more defensive intensity. The sight sparked enthusiasm from the crowd and wobbled Louisville.

Back-to-Back baskets  by Joe Crawford reduced a one-time 11-point deficit to 19-14.

But Andre McGee drove purposefully for a layup. Then Crawford threw away a pass against U of L’s press.

Mark Coury picked up his third foul with 7:30 left. At that point, U of L led 21-14.

Kentucky falls behind by double digits

Clearly the better team early, Louisville zipped to a double-digit lead barely eight minutes into the game.

Two layups by Edgar Sosa and David Padgett off sweet passes put the Cardinals ahead 16-5 at the 11:54 mark.

UK missed all but two of its first 14 shots. Patrick Patterson struggled, making only one of his first eight attempts. Three times he had shots blocked, the third time by 6-foot freshman Preston Knowles of Winchester.

Derrick Jasper broke the spell by making a three that cut Louisville’s lead to 16-8 at the second TV timeou (11:15).

Louisville takes early 10-5 lead

Louisville had a 10-5 lead at the first TV timeout (15:49).

Kentucky made its first shot — a three-pointer by Ramon Harris seven seconds into the game. But UK made only one more shot (a dunk by Patrick Patterson off a Mark Coury pass) at the first timeout.

By then, UK had already put Derrick Jasper (the hero of the victory over Florida International) into the game.

After that game, FIU Coach Sergio Rouco questioned whether UK could duplicate the 11-for-22 three-point shooting that buried his team. Until the first TV timeout, the Cats had made two of six shots (one of four from three-point range).

Kentucky rolls to easy victory

A sweet respite in a turbulent season.

That’s what Kentucky’s 92-49 victory over Florida International represented on Monday.

The Cats took the lead barely three minutes after tip-off and steadily expanded it. The margin reached 42 points with barely three minutes left in the game.

Kentucky, which is off to its worst start since the 1989-90 season, needed a feel-good game. The Cats improved to 6-6 overall going into Saturday’s game against arch-rival Louisville.

Florida International fell to 3-9 in losing its sixth straight.

Jodie Meeks matched his career high of 21 points. Ramel Bradley led the Cats with 22 points. Patrick Patterson added 20 and Joe Crawford 11.

Bradley became the 55th UK player to reach 1,000 points in his career.

Derrick Jasper played well in his second game of the season. He scored four points, matched a career-high 10 rebounds and handed out five assists in a demonstration of floor generalship.

Kentucky leads 61-34 with 10:52 left

All seemed on cruise control as Kentucky kept expanding its lead.

A 16-4 run put UK ahead 61-34.

UK shot well, defended with purpose and completely outplayed Florida International.

Four UK players reached double figures mid-way through the second half. The four were Jodie Meeks, Ramel Bradley, Patrick Patterson and Joe Crawford.

Bradley reached the 1,000-point plateau. Meeks eclipsed his previous career-high of four three-point baskets.

Kentucky leads 52-30 with 15:15 left

Kentucky matched its largest lead of the game by moving in front 52-30 at the first TV timeout of the second half.

Credit Derrick Jasper. He came off the bench inside the first minute. He brought a steadiness to UK’s play. His fastbreak feed netted Patrick Patterson a layup that put the Cats ahead by 22.

Kentucky matches highest-scoring first half

Kentucky matched its highest-scoring first half of the season in taking a 43-21 lead over Florida International at intermission.

Two baskets by Ramel Bradley in the final 35.2 seconds enabled UK to match the 43 first-half points scored against Texas Southern.

Each basket was memorable. On the first, Bradley drove on the fastbreak, cuffed the ball as if to start a behind-the-back pass to the left before bringing it back and completing the fastbreak himself.

On the second, Bradley stole Alex Galindo’s pass near halfcourt, then sped to the basket in less than three seconds for a layup at the buzzer.

The flurry was part of a 13 first-half for Bradley. He came into the game needing eight points to reach 1,000 for his career.

Good shooting enabled UK to have a big scoring first half. The Cats, who had made at least half their shots in the past four games, hit 12 of 24 in the first half.

Jodie Meeks hit three three-pointers, which left him one short of a career high.
